Zabzugu/Tatale, Sept. 22, GNA - The Zabzugu/Tatale District in the Northern Region has been cut off from the rest of the Region and other parts of the country due to the flooding of the Oti River. No vehicle can cross the river to Yendi from any part of the district due to heavy down pour, and all economic activities have come to a halt.
Houses in Bators of Sabare Number Two have been submerged, and residents there are now living with their friends at Sabare Number One. Canoe owners charge a fare of two Ghana cedis per passenger to convey people across the two flooded streams. The Zabzugu/Tatale District Chief Executive (DCE), Nar Umar Abdul-Wahab, who was returning from a workshop in Snyani had to park his official vehicle on the other side of the river and board a conoe to Zabzugu.
The DCE who briefed news men at Zabzugu about the havoc, described the situation as serious, and requested for tents from NADMO to house the displaced people in the area. He said the roads at Nakpale, Kworile, Tikpaani, Waribogu, and other farming communities in the area have been rendered inaccessible, and that a lot of foodstuffs, particularly yams, are locked up in those areas.
Mr. Abdul-Wahab indicated that more than 300 houses have collapsed at Zabzugu, Tatale, Nakpale, Kworile, Sheini and Binatabi townships. He warned all those who are living along river Oti and the streams to move to safe areas to avoid further disaster. The DCE also appealed to the Ghana Highways Authority to supply the Assembly with life jackets and engine boats to be used for the transporting of travellers on the river.
