Techiman, Oct. 4, GNA - A five-member Municipal Food Security Network has been inaugurated with Nana Owusu Gyare II, Akwamuhene of Techiman Traditional Area, as its chairman.

Inaugurating the committee Mr. Prince Yaw Donyina, Techiman Municipal Chief Executive, said the misuse of chemicals by some farmers in spraying vegetables called for intensive education. He said the rampant sale of un-prescribed chemicals needed to be stopped to save the lives, especially those of farmers.

Mr. Donyina lauded the formation of the network, which he said would help to promote food security.

He said the government had provided three tractors to the assembly to be hired by farmers at a reduced price to plough their lands for increased production.

He said a 9.7 billion-cedi irrigation project at Kaniago in the municipality was under construction to add up to those at Tanoso and Kokoago.

Mr. Donyina appealed to the committee members to work hard towards food security using improved and proper use of agro-chemicals on food crops.

Nana Owusu Gyare said Ghana could get abundant food without the use of chemicals.

Nana Kwaw Adams, Executive Director of Abrono Organic Farming Project, said the NGO was linked to MOFA to assist farmers to produce food crops, using organic manure.
