Elmina, April 25, GNA - A 26-year old food vendor who sold cooked food without a covering medical certificate was on Friday fined 350,000 cedis by a district court at Elmina.

Maame Efua, who pleaded guilty with explanation, would go to jail for seven weeks in default.

Prosecuting Mr James Makame, the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem District Environmental Officer, told the court that in January Maame Efua failed on three occasions to produce a medical certificate authorizing her to sell the food. In her explanation, Maame Efua claimed she had a certificate but the court rejected the explanation on grounds that she should have shown it to the officials.

It directed that 300,000 cedis of the find, when paid, should be put into the coffers of the assembly.

At the same court Mariama, a 32-year old housewife was also fined 300,000 cedis for various sanitary offences.

The court was told that her surroundings were filthy, she had piled up refuse and had stagnant water near her bathhouse that was breeding mosquitoes.

The court also ordered that 300,000 cedis of the fine should go to the district assembly.
