In Ghana’s fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, made a world acclaimed statement that has been re-echoed time and time again.

The now famous “We know what to do to bring back our economy back to life. What we do not know how to do is to bring people back to life” statement has been challenged.

Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale Central, Inusah Fuseini has challenged the former part of the statement, insisting the President knows not how to revive the economy of Ghana.

He made this statement in an interview on Happy98.9FM’s ‘Happy Morning Show’ with Samuel Eshun where he said, “I can challenge the President’s statement. He doesn’t know how to bring the economy back. He said the economy is robust and can survive any shock. But COVID-19 was able to shake our economy in a matter of 3 weeks, compelled us to go for budget support, go into the stabilization fund and go for loans to support the economy, then how can he revive the economy?” he queried.

On his authority, COVID-19 has shown the vulnerabilities in the Ghanaian economy prior to the virus’ outbreak and that has been compounded by the virus itself. With the President just on a charade and “not doing anything to secure the economy”.

Comparing developing nations like India to Ghana, the MP stated that, “India, a country that is of the same standing as Ghana has been able to provide for its citizens without any external support and that is proof of a country that can revive its economy and not Ghana”.
