Former COCOBOD Union Chair dead

The immediate past chairman of the Supreme Consultative Council of cocoa workers union, Alhaji Idris Hassan, is dead.

He died last Monday at the Tema Port Clinic, The Herald is informed. Alhaji, who was 62, has since been buried at Tema, last Tuesday according to Islamic beliefs.

According to his son, Dauda, his dad complained of not feeling well and was rushed to the Tema Port Clinic, but moments later, he passed on.

He worked for COCOBOD for many years until he retired, and due to his hard work, secured contract during former Chief Executive Dr. Stephen Kwabena Opuni’s tenure.

He served as the chairman of the workers’ union, but upon assumption of office of the new administration led by Joseph Aidoo, his contract was terminated and a new executive of the Council was put in place.

The late Alhaji Hassan, led the cocoa workers to sever ties with Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU) and General Agricultural Workers Union (GAWU) last year, after several attempts by the mother union to stop the formation of an in-house union, failed.

His commitment to form the in-house union, led to a lawsuit against him and his team, which he fiercely fought against the ICU and won.

He would be remembered for his commitment to the well-being of cocoa workers.

Funeral rites according to Dauda, will be announced later.

He was survived by a wife and three children.
