Accra, Jan. 18 GNA - Former Canadian Prime Minister, Mr Joe Clark, on Wednesday called on President John Agyekum Kufuor at the Castle, Osu as a follow-up to a proposed project to remove tree stumps in the Volta Lake.

The project is to enhance transportation safety, using a unique technology developed by Canada.

Should a deal be clinched for the project to take off, it would be the first time the technology would be applied anywhere in Africa. Mr Clark said opportunities were there for turning the lake into a substantial economic usage and development.

President Kufuor said he was anxious to see the project implemented in view of the useful link the Volta Lake provided between the South and the North as well as its other immense economic advantages.

He said he could not see any hindrance on the part of his Government should the technical people at the Volta River Authority, the Minister of Energy and Minister of Ports and Harbours and the Canadians reach an agreement.

The Canadian firm involved in under-water resources management is to assist Ghana to dislodge logs trapped under the Volta Lake. The firm also has the technology to get rid of trees that grow under lakes without destroying the lakebed.
