Former National Security Advisor assesses two past NDC administrations

Former National Security Advisor, Brigadier General Nunoo-Mensah has compared the two NDC administrations in which he served as security advisor.

The top Security Council man said he knew the late ex-President as a man of integrity and one who was incorruptible both in his personal and public circles.

In an interview on UTV’s morning show ‘Adekye Asroma’, the Security Advisor said the late Professor Mills wanted to change Ghana while he was the Head of State. He bemoaned the fact that he (Late Professor Mills) had to die while in office as president.

He praised the leadership style of Proffessor Mills stating that he was a leader who saw the need to work with his team. He likened his relationship with the late statesman to that of twins. He added that ex-president Mills remained “truthful” while in office.

However, Brigadier General Nunoo-Mensah stated in no uncertain terms the opposite treatment he received during the erstwhile John Mahama-led administration. The Security expert said that he was sidelined in the new administration.

He added that he was always frank in his capacity as the National Security Advisor and this did not augur well with some executives of the NDC. He revealed that he was not consulted on National Security issues during the John Mahama regime.

The former Security Advisor alleged he was only a figure head but was not allowed to play any major role in the administration. He cited that when the Mahama government had to decide on the fate of the Gitmo 2, he was not consulted in anyway. He said that the actions taken in the Mahama administration made him feel bad and sometimes unwanted.

He went on to further criticize the Mahama administration for lacking some key leadership qualities. He said as a leader, it was your responsibility to ensure that the whole team is carried along every step of the way but this characteristic was not present in the Mahama-led government.

He believed that ex-President Mahama used an ‘inexperienced’ team in his administration.

He said he felt disrespected when he was ignored by ministers and other state functionaries after he had written several letters on national security concerns to them.

He advised President Akufo-Addo to learn a lesson from this so as not to fall prey to the mistakes of the past administration.
