A Former Head of State of Nigeria, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (Rtd) has called for a clear new policy on education for Africa geared towards producing critical minds and problem solvers, particularly, in the Sciences.

“Establishing a knowledge economy requires high quality and affordable higher education that is supported by a well-funded research and development regime and underpinned by a sound information and communication infrastructure,” he said.

He was speaking at a Special Congregation Lecture of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) on Wednesday. The Theme for Congregation is: “Sustaining Excellence in Educational Leadership for Accelerated National Development”.

Addressing the topic, ‘The role of Education in Developing Society’, Gen. Abubakar said the only future for Africa is that of unfettered democracy- of free, fair and credible election, of pluralism and tolerance, of accountability, of rule of law, and of governance - for sustainable human development.

“The era of uncreative and authoritarian despotism is over in Africa,” he declared.

He stressed that that, only education could guarantee Africa’s future in true democracy.

The Former leader said education opens up new worlds and visits for people and liberates the mind from variety of prejudices.

He said as a means of social mobility and an avenue for employment, education raises people’s standard of living and helps to eradicate inequity and inequality in the society.

He, however, commended Ghana for its laudable educational system, which he said, has sustained its stride towards democracy and development.
