Former Sports minister Yamin endorses George Afriyie for GFA presidency

Vice-president of the Ghana Football Association George Afriyie last Friday announced that he will be contesting for the highest position of the country’s football governing body during next year’s elections.

And according to former deputy Youth and Sports Minister Joseph Yamin the current GFA number 2 will be a perfect choice.

Kwasi Nyantakyi, president of the GFA since December 2005, will not be seeking re-election in 2019 prompting his deputy to make the big declaration publicly and Yamin believes George has what is takes to be the next GFA president.

“My first engagement with George was during the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Turkey. I became the deputy sports minister and it was my first assignment. It was there that I appreciate his level of expertise in football matters and for me, George is more than capable of succeeding Nyantakyi” Yamin told Kumasi-based Metro FM on Wednesday morning.

Asked if George will not be disadvantaged for the fact he has been a key member of the association during this period of struggle but Yamin thinks otherwise.

“If my son is one day set to become the sports minister and somebody makes the argument that I, his father was once a sports minister and so my son should suffer because of my weaknesses have shown whilst in office, will that be acceptable? I don’t think so. George is George. Nyantakyi leads the association and I don’t think this should be a problem at all” he explained.
