Former parliamentary aspirant jailed for fraud

Duayaw-Nkwanta, (B/A), Jan. 23, GNA - A circuit court at Duayaw-Nkwanta in Tano North District of Brong Ahafo Region, has sentenced 26-year-old Emmanuel Kofi Osei, an unsuccessful parliamentary candidate of Asutifi North in the 2008 general election, to 10 years' imprisonment for defrauding six people.

Osei, who stood on the ticket of the Democratic People's Party (DPP), pleaded guilty to the charge of fraud and was convicted accordingly.

Prosecuting, Police Inspector Christiana Suzar Ahatse told the court presided by Mr Emmanuel Amah Yartey that during the December 2008 election Osei went to Duayaw Nkwanta and introduced himself as a worker of Newmont Ghana Gold Limited at Kenyasi.

The Prosecutor said whilst there, Osei told some people that there were vacancies at the driving and secretariat departments of the Mining Company and could assist them to gain employment.

"Some people expressed interest and Osei took sums of money that amounted to GH¢1,500 from them as application facilitation fees but was not seen again until the Police arrested him at Kenyasi," Inspector Ahatse said.
