Four Dead In Religious Clash

Tue, 20 Jan 1998 Source: --

ACCRA Four people were killed when two Muslim groups clashed at Wenchi, 425 km northwest of Accra.

Twenty-four others were seriously injured in the clash which started in a dispute between the Tijanniyas and Al-Suna sects over the burial of an Al-suna.

One car and two houses were burnt and all the dead were Al-Sunas, and a contingent of soldiers and policemen has been sent to maintain law and order.

Security sources said 48 people were arrested on Sunday.

They said the trouble started when Tijanniyas protested against the use of a cemetery by Al-Sunas because they claim the Al-Sunas do not help in maintaining the facility.

The Al-Sunas reported to the police who intervened for the burial to take place.

However, some of the Tijanniyas went to town and reported that they had been attacked and fired upon at the cemetery by the Al-Sunas.

This infuriated the Tijanniyas who organised and armed themselves and headed for the cemetery to attack the Al-Sunas who were on their way home after the burial.
