Four Metropolitan and Municipal District Assemblies (MMDs) have benefited from the Ghana Urban Management Pilot Project (GUMPP), to help build their capacity.

The four beneficiary MMDs include the Tamale, Kumasi, Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assemblies and the Ho Municipal Assembly.

They each received a Nissan pick-up vehicle and a computer with accessories.

Mr. Bruno Leclerc, Resident Manager for AFD said that the GUMPP programme was financed by the AFD with a total amount of 40.5 million euros for the four MMDs and a grant of 0.5 million euros.

He explained that the funding was a concessionary loan to the government of Ghana which together with the grant would support the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD) and the four beneficiary MMDs to finance priority investment projects and also support capacity building.

Mr Leclerc said this on Friday at a brief handing over ceremony in Accra where he and the Deputy Minister of the MLGRD), Mr. Baba Jamal, officially handed over the items to the beneficiaries.

Mr. Jamal admonished the beneficiaries to take good care of the items and use them for their intended purposes, urging them to work hard to enable their respective people derive the full benefits of the offer.

Mr. Sylvanus Kofi Azdornu, national coordinator of the GUMMP programme said the programme would be implemented over a period of 5 years and that the funds would be used to support various infrastructural developments in the beneficiary MMDs.

“Under the programme, support measures will be provided to include urban management programmes, street naming and addressing, property naming and valuation and other training programmes,” he added, explaining that the intervention of the programme would enhance the living conditions of the population in those four cities and strengthen urban management in the assemblies.
