Brigadier Dan Twum, Commanding Officer of the 37 Military Hospital, has reiterated that last Sunday's motor accident involving the president's motorcade claimed the lives of four security personnel and not five.
He said the hospital on Sunday received seven people out of which four were brought in dead. The three others are on admission. Brig. Twum was reacting to a statement issued in Accra last night by the Ministry of Communications that the accident claimed four military personnel and a civilian.
He said one of the presidential bodyguards who died was in mufti. Last Sunday afternoon, President Rawlings and his wife, Nana Konadu, escaped unhurt when their Jaguar car was involved in the accident caused by the driver of a white Urvan minibus near the Adjei-Kojo Overpass on the Accra-Tema Motorway.
A visit by the Minister of Health, Professor Kwaku Danso-Boafo and some journalists revealed that the three survivors of the accident were responding to treatment. Brig. Twum, who led the team round, said the hospital authorities were satisfied with their quick response to treatment.
The team also visited Dr. Kwabena Adjei, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, who is on admission at the hospital. Brig. Twum said he was responding to treatment but could not say when he would be discharged. The only victim of the June 5 plane crash still on admission, Alhaji Abdullai Yaya, Board Member of the Ghana Supply Commission, thanked the hospital authorities, Mobitel and religious bodies for their assistance. According to Brig. Twum, though Alhaji Yaya is fully recovered, he is learning to walk after breaking the two legs.
