Four injured in rioting at Somanya

Two policemen and two civilians got injured in a riot at Somanya which was started by a group of people from Nuaso near Kpong furious over a two-day power outage in the area.

The group were heading towards the office of the Somanya Power Distribution Services, Ghana to protest there.

The Eastern Regional Police Deputy Public Relations Officer (DPRO, Sergeant Francis Gomado said the police met the rioters at Somanya burning about 40 car tyres and managed to seize about 21 from them.

He said, the rioters had weapons which included machetes, carpentry saws, broken bottles and other offensive implements which they ended up attacking the police with.

Constables Michael Bortey and Edmund Asamoah were injured by stones.

The two injured civilian rioters are Michael Asare, 39 and Teye Kwame, 35 who were hit by stray bullets are receiving medical attention at the Eastern Regional Hospital.

Sergeant Gomado said the rioting worsen when the second group of men from Ogome near Somanya came to confront the rioters to stop tarnishing the image of the Krobos and this brought about stone throwing among the two groups.

Sergeant Gomado said the situation went out of control until 85 policemen from Akosombo, Akuse and Akropong came in as reinforcement to support the Somanya Police to bring the situation under control.

He said nine people were arrested as suspected rioters to assist in investigations.
