Accra, Dec 19, GNA - Four institutions, Victory Bible Church, Compassion Mite, Legon Leo Club and Second Image Beauty Therapy Academy at the weekend organised a pre-Christmas party for about 150 elder persons in Accra.

The party, held at two places; Help Age Secretariat and the Help Age Day centre was meant to entertain the aged and boost their morale to prepare their minds for the Christmas season.

They ate, drank and danced to their satisfaction. Mr Ebenezer Adjetey-Sorsey, Executive Director of Help Age Ghana said the beauty therapy was to remind the aged that even though they were old, they could still lead a fulfilled life. Whilst the men went through manicure and pedicure the women also went in for face lifting.

He said some of the aged, especially the men easily give up because they feel their time had past and no longer cared about themselves. Some of the elderly cannot even cut their nails because their bodies were weak and they shake therefore, in trying to do it, they cut themselves with blade, he added

Mr Adjetey said the therapy was the first attempt and it was also to prevent them from going to "Wanzam" for manicure and pedicure through which they could easily be infected with HIV.

Mrs Rose Saka, Warden of the Centre said the older women were more active than the men, adding whilst the women come to the centre and engage themselves in beads-making the men only come to read. She said the centre was opened to older persons where they could come and relax, watch television, listen to radio and also exercises their bodies.

Mr. Alex Owusu Ofori, Administrator at Second Image Academy said some of the tools used were discarded, whilst others were sterilised, adding that they were used on one-to-one basis.
