A team of police personnel has arrested four individuals for engaging in galamsey activities on the Pra River.

The police team, led by officials from the Twifo Atti Morkwa Assembly, including District Chief Executive Robert Agyemang Nyantakyi and Police Commander Supt. Charles Boateng, arrested the suspects along the bank of the Pra River on September 3, 2024.

According to a report by UTV, the arrests were prompted by the terrible state of the river in the region, which has been severely polluted by galamsey activities, making it unsafe for use.

Following the arrests, the dredging machines used by the illegal miners were seized and burnt on-site by the officials.

Meanwhile the arrested individuals are currently in police custody.

The arrest comes amid mounting calls and pressure from Ghanaians urging the government to address and take action against individuals involved in galamsey activities.

Additionally, the Ghana Water Limited, in a statement disclosed that illegal mining activities (galamsey) along the Pra River in the Central Region are making it nearly impossible for the company to extract raw water from its Sekyere Hemang Treatment Plant.

This has affected its ability to supply adequate potable water to residents of Cape Coast, Elmina and surrounding communities.
