As part of efforts to implement policies that will inure to the benefit of the aged, Ghana’s Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, on Friday, July 8, organised a free health insurance registration for 1,200 seniors above 60 years in Winneba, Effutu.

Speaking during the exercise, sector Minister Nana Oye Lithur refuted rumours going round in the community that the exercise was being sponsored by a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO).

She noted that similar registrations had been done across the country for prisoners and itinerant girl-porters popularly known as Kayeyei.

“If you are unwell, you cannot live comfortably and you cannot live a good life; that is why we are making the National Health Insurance card a first priority.

“This means we value you. Everything we have to do to make sure you are comfortable, we will do. We have done same for the Kayeyei, we have gone to the prisons in Kumasi, Tamale, Nsawam, and done that for all the prisoners and persons with disability and now we are in the central region doing it for the aged”, she stated.
