Dr Tony Aidoo has kicked against the free-for-all and non-discriminatory implementation of the government’s Free Senior High School (SHS) policy.

The former Senior Presidential Aide and Head of Policy Evaluation and Oversight Unit of the Office of the President from 2009 to 2013, believes the implementation of the policy has been executed wrongly.

In his opinion, the policy should have been targeted at needy and less-privileged students in Ghana. He believes that would have ensured equity.

The former Ghana Ambassador to The Netherlands said he had wished Free SHS “will not inure to the benefit of those who can afford to send their children to secondary school”.

“I thought the Free SHS should be for the benefit of those who could not afford to send their children to school, so that the playing field gradually levels,” Dr Aidoo told Francis Abban on Accra-based Starr FM on Tuesday, 20 November.

He has, therefore, entreated the Akufo-Addo government to “get the underprivileged educated”, as “it will inure to the benefit of the country as well, but don’t give to those who already have it”.

“It is those who don’t have it who should have it,” he emphasized.
