The Black Stars face an uphill task on their path to the 2026 FIFA World Cup final after the group stage draw was conducted on Friday, December 5, 2025.
Ghana was placed in Group L, comprising England, Croatia, and Panama, to battle for a place in the knockout phase.
Head coach Otto Addo has said that even though England are the favorites in the group, he is confident the Black Stars will sail through to the next stage and avoid a group-stage exit.
Some football fans and pundits have asserted that Group L could be regarded as one of the “groups of death,” given the quality of the teams.
This GhanaWeb feature dissects Ghana’s possible path to the 2026 World Cup final if the team emerges first or second in Group L.

Possible Teams to Face if Ghana Finish First
If Ghana manages to finish at the top of Group L in the 2026 World Cup, they could face relatively easier opponents in the early knockout stages.
Their round of 32 game will be against third-placed sides, which could include Saudi Arabia or Uzbekistan. Other African countries like Ivory Coast, Senegal, and Algeria could be likely opponents if they finished third, but Ghana cannot face them because they are from the same confederation.
In the round of 16, the team could face co-hosts Mexico for a place in the next stage. The real test will begin in the quarter-final stage, where they could come up against five-time World Cup winners Brazil in Miami.
In the semi-final stage, they could face defending champions Argentina and may meet Spain in the final.
Possible Teams to Face if Ghana Finish Second
If the Black Stars manage to secure second place in Group L, their path, even with some top teams, could be slightly easier.
The second team in Group L will take on the runners-up in Group K, which could be Colombia, in Toronto in the round of 32.
The biggest challenge will be in the round of 16, where they could face European champions Spain at the AT&T Stadium in Dallas.
If they overcome that huge task, they will then progress to the quarter-final to take on Belgium. The semi-final could be against France, and if they beat them, they are likely to face defending champions Argentina on July 19, 2026, at the MetLife Stadium.
It is worth noting that these are probable opponents the Black Stars could face in their path to the final, and the matchups could change depending on the results produced by the teams.
