From courtroom dreams to koko stands: The koko seller who aimed to be a lawyer but gave it up after pregnancy

Wasila Abdullah, a Ghanaian entrepreneur known for selling koko—a beloved breakfast porridge—recently shared the story of her unfulfilled dream of becoming a lawyer.

Featured on GhanaWeb TV's "Everyday People" program, Wasila revealed her long-held passion for law, a dream nurtured since childhood.

However, her aspirations were cut short when she became pregnant in her final year of senior high school.

Faced with the realities of her situation, she decided to abandon her educational pursuits to support her future children and family by selling koko.

"I had always wanted to be a lawyer when I was in school," she told Victoria Kyei Baffour of GhanaWeb. "But when I got pregnant in SHS 3, I had to put aside my dreams and focus on this business to provide for my children."

Despite the unexpected turn in her career path, Wasila discovered a new passion in her entrepreneurial endeavours.

She explained that her business acumen made it difficult for her to consider returning to school after giving birth.

"I couldn't continue my education because I am business-minded. School would have been a distraction; I'd always be thinking about my business and potential earnings. That's why I decided to concentrate on selling," Wasila shared. "Beyond selling koko, I also produce and export koko powder and dough. When it comes to koko, I can do it all."
