A statistical report by the Births and Deaths Registry has disclosed that fathers in 20 occupations were responsible for a staggering 82.2 percent of all births registered in 2022.
The report, which provides a glimpse into the demographics of fathers in Ghana, shows that farmers lead the way, accounting for 28.2 percent of the 677,140 births registered that year.
At the other end of the spectrum, policemen registered the fewest number of births, with just 0.6 percent.
The report further breaks down the statistics, showing that traders fathered 10.3 percent of newborns, closely followed by drivers at 10.1 percent. Teachers, businessmen, and masons also featured prominently, responsible for 5.7 percent, 5.4 percent, and 4.9 percent of births, respectively.
Carpenters and auto mechanics accounted for 2.5 percent and 2.3 percent of all infant births recorded in 2022.
The report, which was launched in Accra, also highlighted that miners, public/civil servants, students, electricians, welders, and doctors fathered between 1.9 percent and one percent of all registered infant births.
Tailors, fishermen, reverend ministers, bankers, and accountants were responsible for between 0.9 percent and 0.6 percent of the total births registered.
On average, 1,855 births were registered daily across the country during the period under review, with the births registration performance for 2022 standing at 92.7 percent against the projected infant population. This leaves approximately seven percent of the expected births for 2022 unregistered.
