Fuel Spillage causes fear at Ashaiman

Some residents of Ashaiman in the Greater Accra Region were griped with fear when fuel spilled out from a filling station which is under renovation in the area after torrential rains.

Business people at the main lorry terminal were alarmed when the rain water turned black after fuel spilled from the Total Filling Station.

The anxious residents anticipated an explosion just like what happened at Kwame Nkrumah Cycle in Accra more than a year ago which killed over 100 people.

The stench at the main lorry station, Ashaiman Municipal Assembly (ASHMA), former main lorry park, among others was very strong.

The ASHMA market complex was submerged after the rains which started at about 11:00 am.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) was called to salvage the situation due to the stench emanating from the rain water.

The fire service personnel applied chemical and water to the spilled fuel at the fuel station to avert any explosion.

The situation, which was alarming, drew the attention of many nervous people in the area while others took to their heels for fear of being killed in an explosion.

Eye-witnesses told DAILY GUIDE that due to the blocked drains, rain water entered the filling station which caused the spillage of fuel.

Management of the total filling station appealed to the shop owners and residents in the vicinity to calm their nerves, adding that there was no cause for alarm.

Business activities at the filling station also came to a standstill due to the unfortunate incident.
