The Vice President, Alhaji Aliu Mahama launched the Catholic University of Ghana Fund in Accra. The budgeted cost for facilities of the university is estimated at C239.6 billion.

The idea of the university was mooted by the Ghana Catholic Bishops' Conference in 1998 and it was given a boost when two members of the church, I.K. Peprah a businessman and Dr. Kwame D. Fordjuor each pledged C250 million as a start up.

Alhaji Aliu Mahama said tertiary education is so expensive that Government alone cannot carry the burden. Government is not able to adequately maintain the existing educational infrastructure and would therefore support the Catholic Church to establish the university.

"We in government certainly recognise and appreciate your contribution. We would work therefore with you and all other institutions to construct a viable educational system."

The President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference, Most Rev. Peter Turkson said the university to be situated at Fiapre, Sunyani will start with three faculties: Information Science and Technology, Administration and Management and Theology and Philosophy.

Other faculties planned for the university are: Faculty of Science, Environment, Development Studies and Law and Society as well as Faculty of Agriculture.
