The Ghana Education Service (GES) has denounced two alleged criminal incidents that occurred during the 2026 Super Zonal Sports Competition in the Eastern Region.

In a press statement dated Wednesday, February 11, 2026, the Service confirmed reports of a stabbing and an alleged gang rape connected to the three-day event, which took place from February 4 to February 6, 2026.

The statement described the developments as alarming and contrary to the principles underpinning Ghana’s educational system.

“Management condemns these acts in the strongest terms and emphasises that such behaviour has no place within the Ghana Education Service,” the release stated.

The annual inter-school sports competition is organised to nurture athletic talent while instilling discipline, sportsmanship and unity among participating students.

GES also stressed that it is unacceptable for an event of such nature to be marred by violence or sexual abuse.

Preliminary information gathered by the Service indicates that a student of Koforidua Senior High Technical School was stabbed about 200 metres away from the competition grounds after reportedly stepping out to have lunch with a friend.

The victim was allegedly attacked by students of New Juaben Senior High School. The injured student was treated at a medical facility and has since been discharged.

GES disclosed that one suspect linked to the stabbing has been apprehended and is currently assisting the police with investigations.

In a separate case, a female student of Osino Senior High School was allegedly raped in a bush located some distance from the sports venue.

According to the statement, two students have been arrested in connection with the alleged rape and remain in police custody to aid investigations.

A third suspect, identified as the alleged ringleader and said to be an old student of Koforidua Senior High Technical School, is reportedly at large.

The victim of the gang rape has reportedly received medical care and has been discharged.

She is presently undergoing counselling and receiving psychosocial support from the Regional Guidance and Counselling Coordinator, the Head of the Girls’ Education Unit, and officers from the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU).

GES emphasised that it is handling the matter with urgency and seriousness, assuring the public that due process will be followed.

“Management treats these incidents with utmost seriousness. In line with the Code of Conduct of the Ghana Education Service regarding student behaviour, all culprits will be taken through due process and, when found guilty, will be dealt with accordingly,” the statement said.

The Regional Director of Education has been tasked to apply appropriate disciplinary measures against any school found complicit, as a deterrent to prevent future occurrences.

The Service further appealed for calm among parents, school authorities and the public, urging cooperation with security agencies as investigations continue.

“Management urges all stakeholders to remain calm and cooperate fully with law enforcement agencies as investigations continue,” the statement stated.
