GFD hails Parliament sign language initiative

The Ghana Federation of Disability Organaisations, previously known as the Ghana Federation of the Disabled (GFD), has applauded the Parliament of Ghana for engaging the services of sign language interpreters to enhance the work of the House.

The Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye, announced Tuesday, October 30 some reforms in the House, one of which is to have sign language interpreters work to help bridge the gap between the public and Parliament.

This initiative GFD finds welcoming as they say it will change the way in which public agencies engage with persons with disability (PWDs).

The GFD believes if all state agencies emulate the “kind gesture” of Parliament to accommodate the needs of persons with disability, it will go a long way to “change the narrative”.

While commending the legislative for the novelty, the GFD is also calling on the House to do more by “making their structures more accessible to PWDs”.

They are also calling on all state agencies to take a cue from Parliament to help persons with disability be more productive.
