GFL supports NDC’s push for electoral integrity

Mr Abraham Koomson, Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), has expressed support for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) following their invitation to attend a critical presentation on significant discrepancies the party claims to have identified in the Electoral Commission’s (EC) 2024 provisional voters’ register.

Mr. Koomson stressed that workers across Ghana have faced severe hardship under the current New Patriotic Party (NPP) government and are keen to see how the NDC plans to address these challenges and bring relief to the working class.

He believes that the meeting with the NDC is vital, given the urgent need for change due to the suffering of workers under the NPP’s leadership.

The NDC has raised serious concerns about the accuracy of the provisional voters' register ahead of the 2024 elections, alleging that irregularities could undermine the fairness of the electoral process.

To address these issues, the party has called for a meeting with key stakeholders, including Civil Society Organizations, labour unions, diplomats, religious groups, and the media.

In a letter dated September 19, 2024, signed by Dr. Peter Boamah Otokunor, the NDC’s Director of Interparty and Civil Society Relations, stakeholders were invited to attend the presentation, where the party plans to outline the "serious discrepancies" they’ve discovered, which they believe could compromise the integrity of the upcoming elections.

The NDC’s concerns were first raised during the voter exhibition exercise, where they uncovered several anomalies in the provisional register.

Following an unsuccessful meeting with the Electoral Commission—during which the NDC’s request for a forensic audit of the register and the EC’s IT system was denied—the party organized nationwide demonstrations on September 17, 2024, protesting the EC’s handling of the voter registration process.

Undeterred, the NDC has sought to rally support from various stakeholders, including the GFL, to increase pressure on the EC.

The upcoming meeting, scheduled for September 23, 2024, in Labone, Accra, aims to build a coalition in support of the NDC’s call for a forensic audit and to restore public confidence in the electoral process ahead of the December 2024 elections.

Mr Abraham Koomson reaffirmed the GFL’s commitment to attending the meeting.

He praised the NDC for showing leadership during these difficult times and highlighted the importance of hearing the party’s plans to alleviate the struggles of the working class.

“We are eager to meet with the NDC because they have shown true leadership during these trying times. Workers have suffered greatly under the current government, and we want to know what the NDC has in store for us,” Mr. Koomson stated.

In a heartfelt appeal, Mr. Koomson urged workers to unite against what he described as the “common enemy”—the economic hardships caused by the NPP’s mismanagement.

He called for collective action, stressing that unity is essential to overcoming the challenges faced by Ghana’s workforce.
