Accra, Oct. 4, GNA - The Chief of the Army Staff, Major-General Samuel Odotei on Monday praised Ghanaian troops of the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) for carrying out their tasks with zeal, diligence and professionalism.
Maj-Gen. Odotei was addressing a Mission Accomplishment Parade at Burma Camp to commemorate the withdrawal of the last batch of Ghanaian troops from UNAMSIL.
The withdrawal was in consonance with UN Security Council Resolution 1610, which tasked the Secretary-General to finalise plans for the withdrawal of UN Forces to be completed by December 31, 2005. He said the Military High Command had monitored with keen interest and total satisfaction their operational activities in Sierra Leone and was glad that the troops had distinguished themselves as worthy ambassadors of Ghana.
Maj-Gen Odotei noted with satisfaction their humanitarian activities in the form of free medical and dental care rendered to the people, the distribution of clothing and educational materials to needy school children and the construction of quick impact projects to support the local communities.
Additionally, the battalion also provided training support to the Five Infantry Brigade of the Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) while maintaining a deterrent operational posture as the Forces Commanders Reserve. 4 Oct. 05
