GHANA , GERMANY END REVIEW TALKS

Tue, 13 May 1997 Source: --

The tree day review meeting on bilateral consultations between Ghana and Germany ended last Friday in Accra with both sides conceding the need for legislation that would enable the Finance Ministry of Ghana to sign small grants and loans without parliamentary approval.

Both countries contended that this would cut short procedures and help accelerate the disbursement of small grants and loans in support of government projects and programmes under their bilateral agreement and also to determine the level of Germany's assistance to Ghana in the future.

Both Mr. Kwame Peprah, Minister of Finance who led the Ghanaian team and Mr. Christian W. Potyka, leader of the German delegation , expressed happiness at the fruitful discussions between them and the satisfaction with the progress of work on German sponsored projects in Ghana. They had earlier signed minutes of the consultations, expressing their commitment to ensuring the completion of the projects.

Mr. Peprah expressed the gratitude of the Ghana Government to the German Government for its continued support for Ghana as well as Germany's commitment to seeing Ghana through its vision of becoming a middle income country by the year 2020.

He expressed the hope that Ghana will receive more assistance when the two countries meet to negotiate in November this year.

Germany during the last 35 years has contributed 2.2 billion Deutsche Marks to Ghana to Ghana through financial and technical co-operation .

Germany has also , through other donor agencies, channelled 4.4 billion to Ghana in support of its economic reconstruction efforts.
