Sixteen out of 17 suspected hardened criminals were yesterday identified by their victims at a parade held at the Police Headquarters in Accra, says the Times. In a front page story headlined "16 criminals identified at parade", the paper says the suspects were arrested some weeks ago for various crimes including armed robbery, murder and extortion. Others were arrested for terrorising people around Sowutuom, Mandela, East Lego, Adenta and surrounding areas in Accra. GRi
"Two car thieves jailed 15 years", is another front page story in the Times. The paper says an Accra Circuit Tribunal yesterday jailed two members of a car-stealing syndicate to a total of 15 years in hard labour, for conspiring to steal a Toyota Carina saloon car in Kumasi. The accused, Harriman Rickets Addison, driver, and Dauda Sadat, barber, were convicted on their own plea of guilty. Their accomplice, Alhaji Baba Hussein, a teacher, charged with abetment, pleaded not guilty and was remanded in custody until August 26. The tribunal presided over by Mr Charles Nyewolema, ordered that the stolen car should be given back to the owner. GRi
The Times reports that out of 1,300 traders who have paid to be allocated stores or stalls at the new Agbogbloshie market in Accra, only 30 have started business there. A visit by the Times to the market yesterday afternoon showed enthusiasm on the part of some of the traders to do business. They were seen pressurising masons, carpenters and artists to put finishing touches to their stores/stalls.
