The Times in a front page story reports that President Jerry John Rawlings yesterday told the German business community that the government has laid the foundation and identified the vision that will make Ghana a prosperous nation. The Times says the President therefore urged German investors to invest in Ghana to help achieve the vision. According to the paper, President Rawlings was addressing a Ghana Trade and INvestment Forum organised in Hamburg, Germany, by the African Association, the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce and the German-Ghanaian Economic Association. The forum, attended by over 100 representatives of business concerns in Germany, was held to explain to the German business community the investment opportunities existing in Ghana. GRI
In another front page story headlined: Ex-teacher beats up headteacher...Colleagues go on strike", the Times reports that teachers of basic education schools in the Kassena-Nankana District of the Upper East Region, have laid down their tools in protest against an alleged assault on the headteacher of Kologo Primary School, Mr John Awuri. Mr Awuri is alleged to have been assaulted while on duty at the school by Gerald Ayawune Asobayire, a retired teacher and others. The Times says a resolution signed by Miss Bawa Kane and Mr Charles Balouh, chairman and secretary of the Headteachers' Association respectively, condemned the rampant harassment and brutalities meted out to teachers in the course of their duties. The resolution said the inhuman treatment and disrespect which some parents show towards teachers can no longer be tolerated. GRI
In an inside page story, the Times reports that the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has presented six Land Cruiser cross-country vehicles valued at 120,000 dollars to the Ministry of the Interior to be used by the Narcotics Control Board to fight against drug abuse and illicit trafficking. The Times says the donation forms part of the United Nations Drug Control Programme package to the board. The UNDP Resident Representative who presented the vehicles to the Ministry, said the UN has realised the tremendous efforts being made by Ghana to curb the drug problem. GRI
