GHANBATT 11 donates to Korle-Bu Cardio Centre

Accra, May 15, GNA - Ghana Battalion (GHANBATT) 11, the United Natio= ns Mission in Liberia, on Friday donated an amount of GH¢2,500 to the Korl= e-Bu Cardiothoracic Centre to assist in mending sickly hearts. Lieutenant Colonel Albert Dawohoso Commanding Officer of the Takorad= i based Second Battalion of Infantry, who presented the money to the Centre= , said the donation was their contribution towards health delivery to cushi= on those who were financially handicap.

He said heart treatment was very expensive and that a lot of people could not afford. The military, he said, was only known to be in the business of defending the state, a notion which created huge gaps between the militar= y and the public adding that the gesture was also to bridge the civilian-military vacuum.

Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, President of the Ghana Heart Foundation, who received the donation, thanked the military for their constant support of the Centre. He said though the Centre could conduct an average of about 4,000 he= art surgeries a year, it presently performed 3,000 cases due to lack of equipment and facilities.

Prof. Frimpong-Boateng noted that though heart treatment was not meeting the United Nations requirement of 8,000 cases a year, Ghana's Car= dio Centre was the best in the West African Sub-region. He advised heart patients to always visit the hospital rather than resort to herbal treatment. He gave the assurance that the money would be judiciously utilized f= or the purpose for which it was given.
