Acting Rent Commissioner, Fredrick Opoku
Ghana Hostels Limited (GHL) has called for an immediate apology from the Acting Rent Commissioner, Fredrick Opoku, over comments he allegedly made about rent charges at the Pentagon Hostel.
The company said the comments, made during an interview on Hitz FM, created a misleading impression about its operations and pricing structure.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, May 13, 2026, management described the remarks as inaccurate and said they did not reflect the operational realities of the hostel facility.
It further accused the Acting Rent Commissioner of making comments “not based on adequate due diligence,” adding that the remarks unfairly portrayed the company as insensitive to student welfare.

Ghana Hostels Limited disclosed that its standard four-in-one accommodation costs GH¢7,392 annually at Old Pentagon and GH¢8,876 annually at New Pentagon per student.
According to management, this translates to approximately GH¢821.33 and GH¢986.22 per month respectively, including water, electricity quota, and GH¢100 JCR dues.
The company also dismissed claims that hostel fees could amount to GH¢28,000, stating that no such pricing exists within its standard structure.
It stressed that accommodation charges are billed per academic year, not per semester, as had been suggested.
Ghana Hostels Limited further explained that premium rooms with additional amenities such as air conditioning and queen-size beds account for less than five percent of total rooms and are optional.
“The standard room type of 4-in-1 constitutes more than 65% of the total rooms and is priced at comparatively lower rates,” the statement noted.
The company insisted that its rates remain competitive compared to private hostels within the University of Ghana enclave and reiterated its demand for an unqualified apology from the Acting Rent Commissioner.
