The Director of Communication for the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has said personnel from the office of National Security, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Ghana Health Service (GHS) are collaborating to investigate the circumstances that led to the suspected poisoning of some 18 tonnes of tilapia at Asutuare.

The fish stock has been destroyed.

The fish were brought into the country by some Chinese nationals.

President of the Ghana Aquaculture Association, Jennifer Sodji said Ghanaians should not panic over the matter.

The part of the Chinese fish farm where the fish could not survive has been closed down.

Speaking on Ghana Yensom on Accra 100.5FM Friday, 19 October 2018 with host Kwabena Prah Jnr (The Don), Mr Ayisi said: “Yes, it is true that 3 Kia trucks loaded with tilapia suspected to be poisonous, were destroyed. For now, National Security, Ghana Health Service (GHS) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are investigating the matter to find out the cause of the incident”.

All the poisonous tilapia, he stressed, were impounded and destroyed, allaying fears some may have infiltrated the market.

He said: “Some Chinese were about buying some of the fish but they were stopped, the women who also picked some of them were stopped and the ones picked were collected from them”.
