Ho, Feb. 16, GNA - Dr McDamien Dedzo, Acting Volta Regional Director of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has called on business entities and corporate bodies to contribute in cash and kind to support an award schemes instituted by the service to honour its dedicated workers. He said their support would help the GHS in its efforts to retain health professionals in the country.
Dr Dedzo who was speaking at the Volta Regional GHS 2004 Awards Night in Ho on Saturday said, "health delivery is based on partnership and community participation and all shoulders must be put to the wheel to tackle problems facing the sector in the country."
The prizes awarded included colour television sets, large size ghetto blasters and suitcases for first, second and third places in 29 categories.
Ms Doris Agbedu, Kpando District, won the best Community Health Officer award, with the second place going to Ms Grace Atiase of Adidome District, while Ms Lydia Ashong, South-Tongu District, was third.
Mr James Badago, a Principal Enrolled Nurse at the Agbozume Health Centre took the Best Health Centre Worker prize with Ms Peace Dedume, Senior Medical Assistant, Anlo Afiadenyigba Health Centre, taking the second prize, while Ms Beatrice Mensah, Superintendent Enrolled Nurse at Gbledi Health Centre, got the third prize.
Ms Woelinam A. Wortordzor, a Midwifery Superintendent of the Aflao District Hospital, won the best Reproductive Health Worker award with the second prize going to Ms Charity Dushie, Midwifery Superintendent at the Keta Hospital, while Ms Comfort Yerebi Midwifery Superintendent at the Kpando Health Centre, took the third prize.
Madam Joyce Akor, Midwifery Superintendent at the Community Health Nurses Training School, Ho was adjudged the best Health Worker in the Health Training Institutions Category, while Ms Innocentia Gborgblorvor, Nursing Officer at the Volta Regional Hospital, was the best Regional Hospital Worker.
In the Institutional Sector, Peki Hospital was adjudged the Best District Hospital, with Tsito Health Centre, winning the best Health Centre award, while Ho District took the Best District Health Management Team prize.
Mr Steve Selormey, Volta Regional Coordinating Director, who represented the Regional Minister, said government would endeavour to provide health inputs within the constraints of the economy. He pleaded with health professionals to consider the plight of their fellow citizens without adequate health services and refrain from joining the rush for greener pastures.
Mr Selormey said the awards should motivate the winners to perform even better and others to work harder knowing that they are being watched. The Awards Night climaxed the one-year anniversary of the GHS under the theme "Eat Well, Stay Healthy and Live Longer."
