Management of the Ghana Institute of Journalism has given both continuing and fresh students up to Wednesday 5th December 2018 to pay the required 60% and 80% of their fees respectively if they want to be allowed to write the end of semester exams.
This comes after a meeting between management and the Students’ Representative Council following a protest by students on Sunday against management’s decision to prevent them from writing the exams.
Financial Secretary of the SRC, Redeemer Buatsi speaking to the media said, “Those who have complained that they paid after the deadline and were not allowed to register, a three-day window has been opened. Therefore, those who were unable to pay can use this opportunity to register and write the exams.”
He added that, those who were denied access to the examination hall would have to resit the paper since it serves as a punishment for failing to meet the deadline. These include beneficiaries of scholarships, student loans and students who could not meet the November 21 deadline.
Head of Public Relations at GIJ, Nana Akua Agyemang-Badu noted that, there were three months extensions for students to settle their fees and register and any student who claims to have been denied access to the exam hall failed to meet the requirement.
“There have been extensions periods to allow more students to pay their fees. Since we reopened in August, there has been an extension to the end of September, to October then November, 21. There has been a lot of concessions and I think management has taken into consideration students who have issues with payment and that is why the long extension was given,” she explained.
She added that, matters relating to students who have paid the required amount and faced challenges, would be dealt with by Academic Affairs.
She called on students who paid before the designated deadline but were not allowed to write the exams to go to the Academic Affairs to have their names added to the paid list to enable them partake in the end of semester examination.
Some aggrieved students claim their plea to management is to just allow them write the exams since it was the first semester, and withhold the results of final year students until they settle their fees.
