GIS pupils donate books to West Hills Mall library and FOCOS Orthopedic Hospital

Pupils of Ghana International School, Junior Section on Thursday, March 28, 2019 donated over six hundred books to the Pom-pom Library at West Hills Mall and the FOCOS Orthopedic Hospital - Kofi Annan Learning Center.

Under the auspices of a charity project called The Book Drive, the school presented three huge boxes made up of slightly used books collected from students to the library and the hospital.

The ultimate goal of the donation is to help less-privileged children living in Weija and its environs have access to good reading materials in the library.

In the same vein, the donation to the hospital is to ensure that children on admission at the hospital get to read interesting books during stay there.

Presenting the reading materials to representatives of the Pom-Pom library and FOCOS Orthopedic hospital, the Vice Principal of the Junior School of GIS, Nadia Bruce-Muller commented that the donation falls in line with one of the school’s strategic goals which is to make impact in the community through service.

“At GIS we have strategic goals and one of them is to make an impact in the community through service. Every year there is always something that we are working on. In past years we’ve had a Boot Drive for less fortunate children which did not have boots and were playing in local football clubs and other such causes. This year we decided to do a Book Drive and in planning that Ohemaa came to share something that she was doing outside the school. I said wow, so why don’t we partner with you? We want to get some books and donate it somewhere in the community”, she said.

A student of the school who is also an ambassador for the Pom-pom Library, Ohemaa Kyei Mensah explained that she decided to embark on the noble cause to help provide adequate reading materials to children who patronize the library.

She held that the gesture resonates with the motto of the Pom-pom library which states 'a reading child makes a successful child'. She also appealed to other students to donate more books to libraries across the country.

“I took part because people in that area don’t have books to read and also they need education to have a successful life because the motto of the Pom-pom library is ‘a reading child makes a successful child so I would like other children to also be successful in what they do. I became the ambassador of the library because I really like to read and also because they thought that I would like to help other people to get the passion of reading”.

The reps of the Pom-pom library acknowledged the donation and commended GIS and Ohemaa for the gesture. They appealed to the public to follow the path of Ohemaa and assist the library with more books.
