Chairman of GN Bank, Dr. Papa Kwesi Ndoum says his company pulled out of sponsoring the Division One League in order to become the headline sponsors of the Women’s League.
GN Bank recently announced its intent not to renew its sponsorship agreement with the Ghana FA for the Division One League. This has heightened financial burden of club owners in the second-tier league as majority of the proceeds from the GN Bank sponsorship was used to heavily subsidise officiating fees for example.
Clubs are now being asked to pay a minimum of GHc30,000 as officiating fee in the coming season as a result of the GN Bank’s decision to no longer sponsor the league.
But the Head of the Bank, Dr. Papa Kwesi Ndoum explained at the Ghana Coaches Association’s Congress over the weekend that, his outfit’s decision was in favour of sponsoring the women’s league. “Our idea was that we were going to take up the sponsorship of the women’s league” he revealed.
“I love women’s sports and all through my life I have been helped greatly by women. We realise there was virtually no support for the women’s game and therefore our decision”.
It’s not clear when the bank will officially become sponsor of the women’s game but the revelation by Dr. Ndoum is expected to excite followers of the game.
