A group calling itself the Progressive Teachers and Youth Alliance has accused the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) of spending several hundreds of Cedis on obsolete souvenirs.

The splinter teacher union says GNAT has failed in its core mandate of seeking better working conditions of its members.

It argues that the mother teacher union now pays attention to trivial things instead of prioritizing the critical needs of its members.

Speaking to Starr News the convener of the group Koriwie Haruna Muah said GNAT must reconsider its old held tradition of purchasing “obsolete” souvenirs for members.

“By the end of the year, when you go home as a teacher, you bow your head in shame. Someone who just completed secondary school comes home with plenty of items but we teachers get toy radio sets , Gari and sugar from GNAT.

“GNAT does not respect teachers. They just decide by themselves and deduct monies from our mutual fund without our knowledge and without asking us to fill any forms,” he bemoaned.

But the Ghana National Association of Teachers has rubbished the claims. Spokesperson for GNAT Peter Tetteh Korda told Starr News the claims by the splinter lacks credibility.
