GNP objects to presidential pardons

Accra, June 23, GNA - The Ghana National Party on Monday expressed its disapproval of all presidential pardons to all those convicted of causing financial loss to the state.

The party said should such presidential pardons continued; politicians and other top government officials would be careless about the law, knowing that "after all, the president will eventually grant a pardon anyway".

A release signed and issued in Accra on Monday by Mr. Eric Mensah Sarpong, Deputy General Secretary of the Party expressed its support for even stiffer punishment for economic saboteurs as a deterrent.

The statement said it was beyond comprehension for wasting time and money investigation cases of financial loss to the state for prosecution, only for the culprits to enjoy a presidential pardon. "Beyond all that, we believe such actions will demoralise our investigative team and the whole judicial system," it said.
