GNPC Explorco, the exploration subsidiary of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) will begin the exploration and production of crude oil in the Northern Region in 2026.
Principal Corporate Affairs Officer at GNPC Explorco, Kwasi Appiah, who disclosed this said the exploration and production will begin by the third quarter of 2026.
He said the company is currently undertaking seismic surveys, after which the exploration and production will begin.
“The Northern Region is going to be our base next year; we are trying to do some exploration and production here [Northern Region]. GNPC Explorco has been mandated to do some exploration and production here. We’re doing the initial seismic work and next year, we’re hoping that in the third quarter of next year, we can spark,” he said.
Appiah was speaking to journalists in Tamale on Thursday, after GNPC Explorco donated assorted items to the Tamale Children’s Home.
The Voltaian Basin, covering large parts of the Northern Region, is believed to hold substantial oil and gas reserves, making it Ghana's next major hydrocarbon frontier.
Historically, there have been traces of oil and gas found in boreholes in the region for decades, confirming the geological potential.
Sharing the Christmas Spirit
GNPC Explorco presented several bags of rice, gallons of cooking oil, dozens of cartons of biscuits and drinks, sanitary items and learning materials to the home as part of its "Lighting Up the North" vision to the most vulnerable members of the community.
The team visited the Tamale Children's home to deliver a significant donation of food, educational supplies, and essential items.
Speaking after the presentation, Appiah noted that “Christmas is a time for family and for sharing hope. As a new member of this community, Explorco views these children as part of our extended family. While our technical work focuses on the resources underground, our heart is firmly with the people above ground. We want to ensure that the joy of the season reaches every corner of the region.”
Saratu Sulemana, Acting Supervisor of the Tamale Children’s Home commended GNPC Explorco for “doing a lot” for the home, promising to ensure the items are purposefully used to make the children happy.
She appealed to the company and other benevolent individuals and organizations to support them construct a fenced wall around the home to ensure the safety and security of the children.
