GPHA donates 8,400 bags of rice to Niger.

Tema, Aug. 26, GNA -- The Management of the Ghana Port and Harbours Authority (GPHA) on Friday donated a total of 8,400 bags of rice valued at 1.6 billion cedis to the people of Niger. The donation is GPHA's "widow's mite" to help Nigerien victims of the food crises in their country.

Additionally, GPHA donated 2,800 bags of rice each to the Upper West and East Regions at a total cost of 1.4 billion cedis. The total cost of the three donations added up to three billion cedis. Mr. Ben Owusu-Mensah, Director-General of GPHA who presented the rice, hoped it would help alleviate the problems faced by the victims.

"We are at Ports live on cargo, and it is our obligation to pay back some of our revenue through donations," Mr Owusu-Mensah said. He was optimistic that the gesture would solidify the warm and cordial relations between Ghana and Niger, as well as port authorities in the two countries.

"We are in solidarity with the people of Niger, and in times of crisis, we are readily available to assist," the Director-General pledged. Mr Amadou Daouda, Niger Ambassador in Ghana received the donation on behalf of his country, and thanked the donors for the gesture. Mr. Daouda said the donation demonstrated the level of solidarity and brotherliness existing between Niger and Ghana.

He gave the assurance that Niger's economic operators would continue to use Ghana's corridors for their trading activities.

The Niger Ambassador used the occasion to assure the government that Niger nationals in Ghana would continue to be law-abiding.
