GPRTU to sack drivers who abuse tramadol

The National Chairman of Ghana Private Road Transport Union(GPRTU), John Kumah, has directed all Regional Executives to look out for recalcitrant drivers who take alcohol or drugs to drive.

According to him, drivers caught culpable particularly of taking unprescribed Tramadol drug to drive must be sacked immediately. The move is as part of measures to ensure an accident-free Christmas and New year season.

Tramadol, an opioid Pain medication is used to treat moderate to moderately severe pains, however, the drug is being abused by the youth in the country sometimes mixed with other concoctions to harden and influence them to undertake several activities

Some Drivers have also joined the bandwagon taking the drug to influence them to drive tireless and sleepless especially at night, a condition which is reported to have led to several drivers involved in fatal accidents.

Speaking to the media Wednesday during a Council Meeting of the Eastern Region branch of GPRTU, the National Chairman, John Kumah said the union has waged war against such drivers.

The Eastern Regional Director of the National Road Safety Commission, Mr.Kwasi Yirenkyi said, awareness creation and Education has been intensified among both drivers, pedestrians and passengers to reduce the number of road carnages recorded in the region especially during the Yuletide.
