Accra, Jan. 9, GNA - The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of the Ghana Trade Union Congress on Monday said it welcomed the decrease in fuel prices announced by the National Petroleum Authority. A statement signed by the Union's General Secretary Mr Stephen Okudzeto said the GPRTU after an emergency management meeting on the fuel prices appreciated the reduction though minimal with the hope that it would have a positive impact on the running cost of transport operators.

The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) on Friday announced marginal decreases in the prices of premium petrol and gas oil, reducing the price of gallon of premium from 32,000 cedis to 31,800 cedis, while gas oil, which sold at 29,100 cedis now cost 28,950 cedis. The statement called for further lowering of prices to sustain the country's economy.

Meanwhile, the GPRTU appealed to the Ghana Police Service to give the commercial Transport operators the two weeks grace period, allowed by the Internal Revenue Service for the purchase of the vehicle Quarterly Income Tax.

The statement said it was only after the expiration of the grace period that members could be considered to have violated the law. It called on members to strictly comply with the vehicle quarterly Income Tax Law and ensure regular maintenance of their vehicles to reduce accidents on the roads.
