GT to introduce degree programme in Telecommunication

Accra, 12 Aug. GNA - Ghana Telecom Training Centre is collaborating with the Technological University of Denmark, to start a Masters Degree Programme in Internet Mobile Telecommunication in November this year. Dr Osei K. Darkwa, Principal of Ghana Telecom Training Centre (GTTC) who announced this on Friday said the two year programme, which would be facilitated through the state of the art technology would help produce more Information Technology (IT) experts.

He was speaking at the closing ceremony of a five-day training workshop for 41 participants on Voice Over Internet Protocol (VIOP) technology, organised by GTTC, in partnership with the International Telecommunication Union and the International Institute of Telecommunication (IIT), Canada.


VOIP is a technology, which uses Internet packet-switching capability to provide phone service. It enables people with access to the Internet to make free phone calls.


Dr Darkwa said, VOIP had over the years been viewed as an illegal activity but could be used to the benefit of the State when proper adjustment and regulatory systems are put in place.


"VOIP is the future of Telecommunication delivery as it provides the condition for voice to be converged into data and reduce phone bills."

He appealed to both private and governmental agencies to appreciate the value of VOIP and accelerate the setting up of community IT centres in the country.


Mr Donald Bobiash, Canadian High Commissioner said, his country was committed to help Africa to make strides through technological advancement.


"The VOIP training workshop will not only keep participants abreast with technology but also help establish a network of IT experts." The participants drawn from both state and private organisations comprised network professionals, telecommunication engineers, business development, investment and policy technocrats, were given certificates of participation.
