GYM asks government to re-visit policy on SHS

Accra, Aug. 25, GNA - Ghana Youth Movement (GYM), a non-governmental organisation (NGO), on Monday called on Government to rescind its decision to review downwards the four-year duration of Senior High School education, since the policy could be detrimental to the youth.

The GYM also appealed to Parliament not to endorse the policy, as an opinion poll it conducted on Government's course of action indicated that majority of the people did not side with it. This was contained in a statement issued in Accra on Monday by Nana Prempeh Agyeman, Public Relation Officer of the NGO. The statement claimed: "After the threat from the group to drag the matter to court if Government continue to proceed with the review of the educational policy from four to three years without the approval of Parliament, it has been added to the emergency bills to be amended and debated in Parliament from 25th of August 2009."

The statement said as former executives of the National Union of Ghanaian Students, the welfare of the young generation was their priority, since they were the future leaders of the nation. It said there was the need for a referendum on the issue, to enable Government to know the views of all stakeholders. The group also urged Government to take immediate steps to implement the recommendations of the Anamoah Mensah Committee on Basic Education, to ensure a formidable future for the nation's educational system.
