Ga South Municipal Assembly yesterday in a vote of no confidence fashion voted against Mills’ appointee Jerrry Akwei Thompson, for the seat that has been empty since November last year.
In response to last two weeks reportage here on Ghanaweb that the people of the area are demanding the president to appoint a new Municipal Chief Executive save the assembly which is perceived to be being mismanaged by the care takers, the president appointed Mr. Jerry Akwei Thompson, the Greater Accra Regional Organizer of the party to take over.
However, when he was presented to the Assembly, he had 29 yes votes as against 19 no which in constitutional terms runs short of the two third majority votes needed to aid his approval and subsequent instatement.
According to some of the Assembly members who shared their views solely on grounds of anonymity, many of their electorate including their respective traditional leaders sent a petition to the presidency recommending one candidate who was eventually overlooked due to his tribal leaning. According to him, the move was to send a clear message that the Assembly frown on all forms of tribalism and ethnicity.
Sources disclose that the result was set to reduce because members were not given enough time to deliberate on the issues whilst some had their elbow greased and therefore got influence to go the party way.
The chiefs of the area have also taken a stance to put pressure on the Assembly members to overwhelmingly reject the president’s nominee.
Reasons given for his impending rejection if the information coming is something to go by, are given that he has a very poor human relations and though he is a resident of the area, he has not made any meaningful contribution towards the development of the area.
According to some of the Assembly member who are perceived to be in bed with the NDC party, Mr. Akwei in his capacity as the Greater Accra Regional Organizer of the party did very little to unite the party at the constituency level with the then Municipal Chief Executive.
The feud between the then MCE, Hon. Sherriff Dodoo and the Constituency Chairman and the then Secretary Bright Demordzi who is currently vying for the party’s parliamentary ticket at Weija Constituency, eventual led to the dismissal of the former.
They also added that tribalism is gradually deepening the division that has been created due to the feud between the afore mentioned leaders and therefore any move that is perceived to be instigated by tribalism should be given total rejection.
Those on the other side of the coin, also believe appointing the Greater Organizer to the Chief Executive role would not correct the current administrative anomalies that is confronting the Assembly.
They added the appointment of Jerry Akwei Thompson, an obvious enemy of the NPP is just for the purpose of elections and not necessarily lead the cause of development and would therefore not bulge for it.
There election would be conducted again on Tuesday the 24th of April and it can be revealed that government is conveying all the necessary accoutrements to the Assembly to ensure that Mr. Akwei emerges victorious on the second time of asking.
