Owner of Accra-based Asaase Radio and member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko has appeared on a political news analysis programme for the first time in a long while.

Gabby, who months back claimed he had quit local politics in an interview on Asaase FM, was one of three guests on Accra-based Channel1 TV's 'What Are The Papers Saying' programme that aired on June 6.

He shared his views on a myriad of political issues including the recent survey that pointed to Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia having a lead against former Vice President John Dramani Mahama in the 2024 presidential race.

“So, the positive aspect of this poll is it doesn’t mean that Bawumia will win the election. But I think the positive aspect is that it appears his candidacy is gaining traction. And if it’s gaining traction, it should help his base in tackling the apathy, that is there,” he said.

“People who voted for you, expectations in this country, like many others, are sometimes too high. So, it’s about apathy, that’s the first difficulty that an incumbent faces.

“I think that the basic antidote to apathy is your base believing that you can win. If they begin to believe that it is possible that you can win. Then they will also be re-energised,” he stressed.

Despite not holding an official position in government, Gabby, nicknamed the Prime Minister in the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government is believed to wield considerable political leverage in the corridors of power.

What Gabby said about quitting active local politics

Speaking to Kwaku Nhyira-Addo on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Wednesday (31 January) Otchere-Darko said, “I have retired from [active] domestic politics.”

“But I get somehow frustrated by the narratives, and a big disappointment I have is with the governing New Patriotic Party itself, it is the lack of recognition of the work that they have done. For me, it’s a major disappointment,” he added.
