A leading member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, has said he will file a suit against the Ghana Police Service next week, for the injuries he sustained when the police brutalized he and other demonstrators on Wednesday.
According to him, it is important that other injured protesters whose human rights were abused in the peaceful demonstration in a suit to seek legal redress in the form of compensation.
There was a stand-off between the Police and pro-opposition groups Let My Vote Count (LMVC), Alliance for Accountable Governance, (AFAG) and Movement for Change (MFC), as they marched in Accra for a new voters’ register.
The exercise ended abruptly after the police fired tear gas, water cannons and beat some protesters who tried to go to the Electoral Commission and in the process many sustained various degrees of injuries.
Gabby Otchere-Darko sustained injuries (laceration) all over his body when he was well flogged with horsewhips by police officers who accosted him.
Speaking to Kasapa News on Friday, Gabby, who is a Lawyer cum Journalist, condemned the unjustified brute force by the police in dealing with unarmed demonstrators, maintaining that he would not be cowed into submission by the police action.
“In spite of the brutalities, I remain resolute in my resolve to join the next demonstration which will take place on Tuesday 22nd September. The idea of a repeat demo is not to engage the police in a standoff that is never our objective; we’re not interested in confronting the police”.
Meanwhile, the Director-General of Police Operations, COP John Kudalor has stated categorically that the police is not sorry for the brutality they meted out to the protesters.
