Ex-President John Rawlings has sympathized with the family of the late Libya Leader Muamar Gaddafi who was tortured to death Thursday afternoon.

The National Transition Committee aided by NATO captured the former Libyan leader, manhandled him, before shooting him to death.

His demise provoked widespread mixed reaction by world leaders.

Addressing students of the University of Ghana, a day after Gaddafi was shot, Mr. Rawlings said the Libyan leader’s belief in the power of the masses was never in dispute.

He said Gaddafi was well aware that the power of the masses could be used to hijack the people.

That empowerment eventually became his nemesis, he intimated.

“In giving it all to his people, I guess the mistake he made was that.. he just could not let go of the empowerment of the people.

“He still held onto the controls and ultimately bringing his family on board to institutionalize his legacy through his children.

“He still behaved as if he owned his people,” he stated.
