Gaisah wins SWAG topmost award

Holland-based Ghanaian long jumper, Ignatius Gaisah, who set a new Africa games record of 8.30metres jump at this year's All Africa Games in Abuja, Nigeria, has been named by the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) as the Sports Personality of the Year.

He also doubles as the athlete of the year after an impressive outing on the international stage.

Gaisah placed fourth at the world championship in Paris, France, and was the only African who got to that level and also came third in the IAAF Monte Carlo grand prix. He was adjudged the fourth best in the world at the end of the season.
As part of his achievement in the year, Gaisah broke two national records. He leapt 8.21 meters and later broke his own record to set a new one at 8.26 meters.

Ghana's four by 100 male quartet relay team, which won gold at the All Africa Games, was the team of the year while last year's sports personality of the year, Margaret Simpson, was named the Female athlete of the year award.
National 800 metres record holder, Akosua Serwaa, was named the Discovery of the Year for winning a silver medal at the All Africa Games and also broke the national record during the World Athletics Championship in Paris. Promising star -Shaibu Yakubu of Obuasi Goldfields who also doubled as joint goal king with Kwadwo Poku of King Faisal with 13 goals apiece.
Evergreen Emmanuel Osei Kuffour of Hearts of Oak is to be decorated with the Dedication and Valour award for his immense contribution to Ghana soccer, Male Footballer of the year -Aziz Ansah of Kotoko - Female Footballer of the year, Adjoa Bayor, Top Scoring club, Kotoko (GD 39 goals) and Coach of the year - Abdul Razak.
Ebo Bartles, whose ingenuity has revived table tennis in the country, has been named Chairman of the year, Table Tennis Player of the year- Nana Yaw Boateng- Volleyball- Casmil Agbenyegah of Kwamerk, Referee of the year -Justice Yeboah and Cyclist of the year, John Zormelo.
In the Special Awards category, veteran journalist Nana Addo-Twum is to be honoured for nearly three decades of sports coverage especially horse racing.
Guinness Ghana Limited and SCANCOM Ghana Limited, operators of spacefon will receive special awards for sports sponsorship, while Fetteh Feyenoord Football Academy will receive an award for football development.
The awards for Professional Boxer of the Year, Amateur Boxer of the Year, Golf Star, and Hockey Star of the Year will be announced later
